| | | | Sportsmanship - A Core Principal | | | | by
posted 01/20/2012 Sportsmanship is a core principal of all youth sports and one too often overlooked in FCYBL. We are on the eve of a "day off" since games scheduled for Fairfax County Games are cancelled due to winter weather warnings tomorrow (Jan 21, 2012). In the light of this "down time" - I ask all parents, coaches, and fans to take a few moments to consider this message:
Competition is only possible through the cooperation of teams and officials. Without a worthy opponent it is impossible to gauge your teams growth and progress. We appreciate our opponents. Equally, we appreciate the officials that create a fair and safe environment for competition. Without officials and without opponents, our league would be a rather dull series of practices. Treasure and respect them both.
It's easy to be a good sport when things are going your way - it takes character and courage to be a good sport when things are falling apart. I encourage you all to be examples to your children. I encourage you to grow in your love of the game and embrace sportsmanship as a core belief.
Win with grace, lose with dignity. Be the best you can be in all of your endeavors. Show our children that the game is more valuable than winning or losing.
Let the players play, coaches coach, and officials officiate. Cheer in a positive manner and respect the opponents and officials. Without them, our league is meaningless.
This season, our sportsmanship committee has issued three formal suspensions to parents and coaches for breeches of our Codes of Conduct. I fervently hope that these are the last for the year. | | | | | | | Fairfax County Gym Games Jan 21 - CANCELLED | | | | by Dave Vennergrund posted 01/20/2012 All Fairfax County public school activities for Saturday, January 21, are canceled due to weather. | | | | by Dave Vennergrund posted 12/02/2011

Change to Grade-Based Teams
By a vote of 13-4, the Council changed the rules for team formation to a grade-based system from an age-based system.
Starting with the 2011-2012 season, teams will be formed based on the grades that players are in for such season; there are very limited age restrictions, but generally teams will be formed based on what grade the player is in for that season.
This replaces the old age-based team formation rules whereby a player was eligible for a team based upon his/her age on September 30 of each year, with each team being allowed two "grade exceptions."
6th Grade Boys to Use 28.5 Inch Basketball
In a unanimous 17-0 vote, starting with the 2011-2012 season, 6th grade boys will use a 28.5 inch basketball for league play. The 28.5 inch basketball has been used in 5th grade FCYBL boys' play for quite a while. The 29.5 inch regulation men's basketball will be used for boys' Grades 7 and 8 league action.
Girls will continue to use the 28.5 inch basketball in all grades for FCYBL play.
