2011 - 2012 Season is in the Books!

Championship Saturday (March 4th) saw 40 teams competing for 20 championships in hard fought, well contested, well officiated, well coached games.  Congratulations to all 40 teams for making the final.

Sunday, March 5th, marked our 8th annual Awards Banquet - where more than 220 All League Players, 20 MVPs, and 20 MVCs received recognition and a hearty breakfast. In addition, FCYBC inaugurated the "Richard Marsh Award" to remember the former FCYBL player from Falls Church. Richard passed away in November, a junior in High School. He was an MVP player, great sportsman, and served others.  His mother, Rena Marsh, spoke on key attributes of sportsmanship and reminded us of Richard's strong character. She helped us make the award to Kate Sciorra, the long-serving CYA league representative and FCYBC Boys commissioner. It was a fitting memorial to Richard to a deserving recepient. Congratulations Kate.

Thanks to all of the hard work from the players, parents, coaches, league reps, league scheduler, officials, and FCYB council. Together we made it a terrific season.

Last month, FCYB Council created the Richard Marsh Memorial Award to honor former Fall Church player.

Richard passed away on November 16, 2011.  He was an outstanding player, terrific athlete, but, even more , a fine young man and gentlemen.  Richard was an all-league player and played on our Falls Church FCYBL team that finished runner-up in the 8th Grade Boys D2 Championship in 2007.

Kate Sciorra, Deputy Boys Commissioner and long-time CYA Leaue Representative was selected as the 2012 Richard Marsh recipient based on her many years of service, superior sportsmanship, steady leadership, and constant, fair resolution of issues important to all of our teams.

On April 6, 2011, the FCYBL Council approved two changes to the FCYBL Rules:

Change to Grade-Based Teams
By a vote of 13-4, the Council changed the rules for team formation to a grade-based system from an age-based system.

Starting with the 2011-2012 season, teams will be formed based on the grades that players are in for such season; there are very limited age restrictions, but generally teams will be formed based on what grade the player is in for that season.

This replaces the old age-based team formation rules whereby a player was eligible for a team based upon his/her age on September 30 of each year, with each team being allowed two "grade exceptions."

6th Grade Boys to Use 28.5 Inch Basketball
In a unanimous 17-0 vote, starting with the 2011-2012 season, 6th grade boys will use a 28.5 inch basketball for league play.  The 28.5 inch basketball has been used in 5th grade FCYBL boys' play for quite a while.  The 29.5 inch regulation men's basketball will be used for boys' Grades 7 and 8 league action.

Girls will continue to use the 28.5 inch basketball in all grades for FCYBL play.

Rules Updated Online
The rules section of the website has been updated to reflect these changes.
